I’m Dr. Aniket Sanjay Bhamare, a resident doctor in DM Infectious Diseases at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, where I also completed my MBBS.
How I came to medicine
My MBBS years gave me a strong foundation in the medical sciences, taught by outstanding faculty.
It was during my clinical postings and internship that I became truly passionate about medicine. I loved the process of listening to a patient’s chief complaints, building a list of possible diagnoses, narrowing it down step by step to the right one, and managing the patient along the way.
Why Infectious Diseases
Infections fascinated me because they can affect anyone: every person, every organ and every age group. As a physician, I wanted to keep my scope as broad as possible, and Infectious Diseases lets me do exactly that. That is what led me to the DM in Infectious Diseases.
My training today
My training takes me through many departments, including internal medicine, microbiology, and medical super-specialities from cardiology to medical oncology. In each, I learn the foundations of that speciality and how to apply them to infections, from simple, common illnesses to complex and rare cases. This includes viral, bacterial and fungal infections, as well as infections acquired in hospital.
I also work in several specialty clinics: the Infectious Diseases clinic, where patients are referred from departments across the hospital for evaluation and management; the Medicine OPD; the ART clinic for people living with HIV; the DOTS clinic for tuberculosis; the chest clinic; and the metabolic and obesity clinic.
My special interests
The areas that fascinate me most are:
- Infections after bone marrow transplant, and how to prevent and manage them
- Bone infections
- Pyrexia of unknown origin (PUO): fevers that remain unexplained even after initial tests
Why The Germ Doc
Through this website, I aim to help the public understand infections from an Infectious Diseases perspective: what causes them, when to worry, and how they are treated. Questions about fevers, antibiotics and infections come up every day, in clinics, in families and online. Good answers are often hard to find, and confusing advice spreads quickly. The Germ Doc is where I answer these questions clearly, with evidence.
How I write
Every article is based on current Indian and international guidelines and published evidence, with references linked, and I update articles as guidance changes. I write in plain language, so you don’t need a medical background to follow along.
